DXF Exporter – Export Sections and 3D Models from BIMvision to DXF
DXF Exporter is a plugin for BIMvision that enables the export of IFC model sections and visible 3D geometry to DXF files. It makes it easy to transfer geometric data from BIM models to CAD applications such as AutoCAD, BricsCAD, ZWCAD and DraftSight.
The exported drawings are generated from the actual geometry of model elements, at a 1:1 scale and with the model coordinates preserved. This makes them suitable for further design work, creating 2D documentation and analyzing geometry in a CAD environment.

Section to DXF
Export sections of IFC models created using cutting planes in BIMvision.
- Accurate section geometry – sections are calculated based on the actual geometry of model elements.
- 1:1 scale – drawings retain their real-world dimensions.
- Preserved coordinate system – horizontal plans use the model’s actual X/Y coordinates, while vertical sections retain the actual Z elevation.
- Color fills – optionally fill section outlines with colors matching the elements’ appearance in BIMvision.
- Layers by IFC type – elements are organized into layers, making them easier to edit, hide and restyle in CAD software.
- Multiple section exports – each active cutting plane generates a separate DXF file. Additional cutting planes can limit the extent of the section.
The export includes visible model elements, including transparent and semi-transparent elements. IFC openings and spaces are excluded, while holes within section geometry remain empty.
3D Model to DXF
Save the visible geometry of a BIM model as 3D meshes in a DXF file.
- 3D geometry – elements are exported as polyface meshes (POLYFACE MESH) using the model’s actual coordinates.
- Colors and transparency – element colors and transparency from BIMvision are preserved, including custom colors assigned to individual elements.
- Clear edges – internal triangulation lines on flat faces are hidden, making the model easier to read in edge display mode.
- Layers by IFC type – elements can be easily selected and managed in the CAD environment.
- Support for large elements – geometry is split into smaller meshes when required by vertex count limitations.
The 3D export includes all visible elements with geometry, regardless of the cutting planes currently set in BIMvision. IFC openings and spaces are excluded.
Simple Export Configuration
The plugin provides settings that allow you to adapt the export to your project requirements:
- Section Fill – enable or disable color fills inside section outlines.
- DXF Units – use the units defined in the IFC file or select millimeters, centimeters or meters. When a specific unit is selected, the coordinates are converted accordingly.
The selected settings are saved and remain active after restarting BIMvision.
